Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at charlotte@hqcoaching.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

No.

HQ Coaching provides coaching‑led pastoral support, not therapy or counselling.

The focus is on confidence, self‑belief, identity and navigating change — rather than treating mental health conditions or exploring past trauma. The work is future‑focused, strengths‑based and non‑directive.

If therapeutic or clinical support is needed, I will always be clear about that and help families think about appropriate next steps.

Yes — where the focus is different.

If a young person is already working with a therapist, counselling service or other professional, coaching can sometimes sit alongside that support when the emphasis is on areas such as confidence, identity, or transitions.

I do not work on the same issues as a therapist, and I am careful about boundaries to ensure support is ethical, safe and genuinely helpful.

No.

I support neurotypical and neurodivergent people.

Many young people I support are neurodivergent without a formal diagnosis, or are exploring whether neurodiversity might be part of how they experience the world.

Support is based on individual experience, not on labels. A diagnosis is not required.

HQ Coaching works with young people aged 11+.

This includes young people who may be older than typical school age but still navigating transitions into further education, training, work or independence — recognising that development and readiness do not always align neatly with age.

No.

HQ Coaching does not provide tutoring, exam preparation or curriculum‑based learning support.

The focus is on confidence, identity, self‑belief and emotional understanding, rather than academic outcomes. Many families already have educational support in place and use coaching to complement this.

Not being sure is very common.

Many families arrive feeling uncertain about what kind of support might help next. An initial conversation allows us to explore what your child is experiencing, what you’re hoping for, and whether coaching‑led pastoral support feels like a good fit.

There is no pressure to continue if it doesn’t feel right.

Most sessions take place online, using secure video platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.

Online sessions often suit neurodivergent young people by reducing sensory and travel demands, and by allowing greater comfort and control over the environment.

In some cases, limited written contact between sessions may also be helpful and can be discussed individually.

In‑person sessions are available by specific request and discussion, where they add clear value — for example, for young people who benefit from having a supported reason to leave the house or practise engagement outside the home.

In‑person work is offered selectively and thoughtfully, rather than as a default.

Parental involvement varies depending on the young person’s age, needs and preferences.

Some work focuses primarily on the young person, with check‑ins for parents. In other cases, parent support is an important part of the work — helping parents feel clearer, more confident and less overwhelmed in how they support their child.

This is discussed and agreed together.

Yes — within the limits of safeguarding.

Sessions are confidential, and information is not shared without consent, except where there is a safeguarding concern or risk of harm. I am clear about safeguarding responsibilities and will always act in the young person’s best interests.

If you’d like to explore whether HQ Coaching might be right for your child or family, you’re welcome to get in touch via the contact page.

An initial conversation allows us to think things through calmly — with no pressure and no obligation.
